Tarka Dhal

Prep Time – 5 minutes

Cook Time – 25 minutes


(Serves 3)

  • 300ml red lentils
  • 500ml water


  • 1tsp salt
  • 1 tsp garlic powder,
  • 1 tsp chilli powder
  • 1 tsp turmeric


  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 2 Tomatoes, chopped
  • ½ yellow onion
  • 2 garlic cloves, chopped
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 1 tsp seeds/ground cumin


STEP 1: Rinse the lentils until water runs clear. Add water, lentils, turmeric, pepper, chilli, garlic powder and salt to a pan and bring to a boil.

STEP 2: Reduce the heat to low and cover with a lid. Check the lentils from time to time and skim off any white froth. Once the lentils are soft they are ready, after around 20 minutes.

STEP 3: For the Tarka: In a frying pan heat garlic and onion with oil and cook for 2 minutes. Add the spices, tomatoes and salt. Serve with the dhal.
